Per Capita Income

Date posted: 08/27/2008

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) calculates per capita personal income by dividing the personal income of the residents by the population of that area as of July 1 for the reference year. Personal income is calculated as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, such as labor income, personal dividend income, and personal interest income, less personal contributions for social insurance.

What these data tell us:

Colorado per capital personal income consistently exceeded United States per capita income by 7.1 to 12.6 percent during 1998-2006. Larimer County per capita income has generally been just a little lower than United States levels. The 2002-2003 slow down in per capita personal income growth was much more pronounced for Colorado and Larimer County than for the United States. State and County growth resumed during 2004-2006, averaging about 5% annually. Preliminary data indicate 2007 growth rates were slower than in 2006.

Colorado's per capita personal income for 2007 ranked tenth highest among states in 2007 even though it had the sixth lowest annual growth rate.

Towns such as Wellington that currently have a higher percentage of children (who earn no personal income), will have a lower per capita income (see Population by Age).
