This measure represents the coverage of law enforcement agencies serving Larimer County. Each police department and the Sheriff's Department reported the number of square miles of jurisdiction and the number of law enforcement personnel per 1000 residents they serve. The personnel counted in these data are sworn officers, not civilian personnel.

What these data tell us:
The area of coverage for each department varies a great deal, from 6.0 square miles for the Estes Park Police Department, to 2640 square miles for the Larimer County Sheriff's Department. What these data tell us:
In 2002, Estes Park had the highest ratio of law enforcement officers to residents. Within Larimer County, Estes Park Police Department's ratio (3.05 per 1,000 population) was most similar to the Colorado average (2.37 per 1,000 population). The remaining County law enforcement agencies had comparable officer/resident ratios, averaging about 1.14 law enforcement officers per 1,000 residents.

What these data tell us:
From 1996 to 2002, the ratios of Fort Collins and Loveland police officers to population remained similar. Both rates correspond with the increase in population in each of these communities. For example, in Fort Collins from 2001 to 2002, the number of police officers increased by 2.7%, just slightly more than the 1.6% increase in the city's population during that time.
