What these data tell us:

According to the 2000 Census, households across the country have more children than senior citizens (65 and over). In Larimer County this was generally true, although community ratios varied widely in some instances. Wellington, for example, had a substantially larger percentage of households with children (48.5%), than Red Feather Lakes at 14.5%. In the years leading up to the 2000 Census, Wellington experienced an increase in new development, with the majority of the new population consisting of families with children. On the other hand, Berthoud had a substantially higher ratio of residents age 65 and older (16.7%) than the county average of 6.3%. Estes Park and Red Feather Lakes, defined as 'resort' communities, also have larger senior and/or retired populations.

What these data tell us:

According to the 2000 Census, Larimer County had a slightly lower median age than the national average. However, the median age in Larimer County cities and towns varied. Fort Collins had the lowest median age (28.2 years), while Estes Park and Red Feather Lakes were considerably older (45 and 54.4 years, respectively).

In 2006, age distribution between age groups 25-34, 35-44, and 45-54 were equally represented at approximately 14% for each group. However, in Larimer County, the 15 to 24 year age group was the largest segment of all age groups. The difference is partially due to the presence of a large university, Colorado State University, in Larimer County.
