What these data tell us:

The gender gap (in terms of age) was almost non-existent for most of the age categories in Larimer County during the 2000 census. Two age groups, 20-24 and 25-29 years, recorded more males than females with a noticeable percentage difference of 9% and 15% respectively. Further analysis revealed this variance was found only in Fort Collins, indicating that the gender difference might be influenced by the presence of Colorado State University. Comparisons with other Colorado counties with and without universities corroborated this observation.

Females tend to live longer than males. Larimer County's female population was no exception, as evidenced by the Census 2000 data. The combined age group, '65 years and over', illustrates there were 3,721 more females than males, or 73.2 males per 100 females in 2000.

What these data tell us:

In 2000, there were more 'White' females than any other racial/ethnic category in Larimer County, Colorado, and the United States. The percentages of all other female racial/ethnic groups in Larimer County were lower than Colorado and national percentages. Colorado had 2.5% more 'Hispanic or Latino' females than the national ratio and 4.3% fewer 'Black or African American' females. Colorado had similar percentages to the United States in the remaining six female racial/ethnic categories.

Like 'White' females, there were more 'White' males than any other racial/ethnic category in Larimer County, Colorado, and the United States as reported by the 2000 Census. Most of Larimer County's other male racial/ethnic groups were lower than the state and nation's percentages. While there were 6% fewer 'Hispanic or Latino' males in Larimer County than in the state, the county was only 1.9% behind the nation. Colorado and Larimer County's 'Black or African American' percentages were lower than national percentages by 4.3% and 5.1% respectively.
