CSAP Reading Scores, 2008-2011
CSAP Math Scores, 2008-2011
The first CSAP tests were given in 1996-97 and have been administered every year since to students in grades three through ten. The tests are subject-based, covering reading, writing, mathematics and science (all four tests are given to fifth, eighth, and tenth grade students only). Testing can be done in Spanish for third and fourth graders. All students are expected to test in English beginning in the fifth grade.
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) uses the terms Advanced, Proficient, Partially Proficient, and Unsatisfactory to measure achievement levels on the CSAP tests, as defined on the CDE website. CSAP scores for all tests and grade levels can be viewed on the Colorado Department of Education website.
Beginning in 2011-12, students will take transitional CSAP tests in prepartion for the rollout of revised standardized tests that will be given in spring 2014.

What the above data tell us:
According to the U.S. Department of Education, 'research shows that children who read well in the early grades are far more successful in later years; and those who fall behind often stay behind when it comes to academic achievement.' For this reason, the charts above represent a student cohort beginning in third grade and follows them through the sixth grade.Throughout the state of Colorado, the overwhelming majority of students (70% or more) were reading at the Proficient or Advanced levels in the third, fourth and sixth grades. Between 18-22% of the same cohort were considered Partially Proficient and between 9-13% were deemed Unsatisfactory.
During this same time period, all three school districts in Larimer County reported better scores than the state averages, with students in Poudre and Park School Districts scoring better than Thompson School District students.
