Low birthweight is defined as less than 2,500 grams (5.8 lbs.), and very low birthweight is 1,500 grams (3.4 lbs.) or less.

In 2010, Larimer County had 271 low birthweight babies (5.8 lbs or less). Larimer County had consistently lower percentages of low birthweight babies than Colorado and the nation. See the data table for national statistics.Neither Larimer County nor Colorado reached the Healthy People 2010 Objective of 5.0% for low birthweight babies (see Standards or Targets).

In 2010, Larimer County had 37 very low birthweight babies (3.4 lbs or less). Larimer County had consistently lower percentages of low birthweight babies than Colorado and the nation. See the data table for national statistics.In the last 10 years, neither the United States nor Colorado reached the Healthy People 2010 Objective of 0.9% for very low birthweight babies (see Standards or Targets). In five of the ten years represented above, Larimer County did reach the Healthy People 2010 Objective.

Healthy People 2010 is a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative establishing national objectives to improve the health of all Americans, to eliminate disparities, and to increase the years and quality of life. New guidelines and objectives have been established for the next ten years, through 2020.
