Larimer County requires a class "C" roof covering along the front range east of the dividing line depicted on the attached map. Most roofing materials can meet the class "C" roofing grade including asphalt composition shingles and wood shakes or shingles that have been pressure impregnated with fire retardant chemicals. (Such shakes and shingles must be labeled by an approved agency as a class "C" roof covering and manufacturer's installation requirements for such roofing must be followed.)
West of the dividing line a class "B" roof covering is required; metal roofing, fiberglass shingles and wood shakes or shingles pressure impregnated with fire retardant chemicals that will qualify for a class "B" roof covering are acceptable. (Class "B" roof covering materials must be labeled as such by an approved agency as class "B" and manufacturer's requirements for installation must be followed.) This area, also, requires an ice barrier protection with the 2006 IRC adoption. A Roofing Certification Form is required to be filled out by contractor doing the work stating that an ice barrier was installed, a Class "B" roof covering was used, and the manufacturer's installation requirements for high wind were met.
Also Item #4 was deleted from Section R907.3 of the 2006 IRC which would of required removing existing roof covering before applying asphalt shingles. This would continue to allow a maximum of two layers of asphalt shingles.
If there is a question on which roof covering is in which rating class, your supplier should be able to help you determine the class of the roof covering being considered. If you are installing wood shingles or shakes a roofing inspection will be required after the shakes or shingles are dropped off at the site and before the roofing is completed. If there are no labels on the shingles or shakes do not install them; they will not be approved for use. It will be the owners and contractors responsibility to get the proper classification of roof covering from the supplier and to be able to show such proof of classification to the building inspector. Any repairs, additions and re-roofs exceeding 50% of the total roof during any one year period must comply with the above requirements. All new construction shall comply with the requirements herein.
