Permit Requirements

  1. If the deck is residential and 30 inches or less above finished grade, then a permit is not required.
  2. If the deck is over 30 inches above finished grade (at any point) then a building permit is required. The permit requires 2 (two) sets of building plans drawn to scale and 4 (four) plot plans as described above.
    1. Building plans must include a deck framing plan, deck elevations, and connection details.
    2. Stairs must also be diagramed including rise and run.
    3. Indicate joist size and spacing and show beam span and spacing between support post.
    4. The structural application must be completed. Submit the plot plans, application, and a submittal fee to the Building Department. Remaining permit fees are due at issuance of the permit.
