What the above data tell us:
According to the Health District of Northern Larimer County, the differences between males and females in contemplation of suicide is not significantly different in any one of the years analyzed. On average, from 2001 to 2009, 42 adults committed suicide each year in Larimer County (Suicide). While suicidal contemplation is much higher in women, men have higher rates of suicide-related deaths. In 2009, 43 men died from suicide, compared to 15 women in Larimer County. (See Suicide)
In 2007, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. Firearms are the most commonly used method of suicide among males and poisoning is the most commonly used method for women.
Suicide attempts, and other acts of self-harm that result in nonfatal injuries, take a heavy toll on the health of the population. What the above data tell us:
Survey respondents were asked: 'In the past 12 months, did you or any member of your household need and/or use any of the community services listed below?' The chart above represents data for the parts of this question that related to mental health services.
A total of 24.6% of respondents reported needing mental health services in 2010, a 75.7% increase from 2007. Of those needing mental health services, 7.5% did not get the help they (or their family members) needed; this represents an estimated 22,695 Larimer County residents (using 2010 total population estimates from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs).
